Worlds Longest Yard Sale 2013

This year I helped my friends Kathy & Jeff with a booth they had at the WLYS!
This was their first year (and they said their last) doing the sale.  While it was 'fun' it was also an enormous amount of work.  Tents, tables, renting a truck to get all the stuff there, unpacking and then there was the rain!
They set up on Sunday and maned their booth everyday.  The official sale is Thur-Sun but many of the booths are there for a full week.  Long, hot days!
This was my 6th year of attending the WLYS and I have seen it change over the years.  With the change in the economy, many people shop but everyone is looking for a bargain!
 A BIG bargain!
Now I know they made sales but since it wasn't my booth I don't know if they made enough to consider it worthwhile.  I hope to have another discussion with Kathy about it all, but she is already back at work teaching Kindergartners!
Kathy & Jeff are like me and enjoy the thrill of the hunt.  Being 'pickers' would be a great job...the selling maybe not so much.  We all had a great time talking to the shoppers and everyone was so nice.
They had about the best eclectic collection of items in any booth in their area.  I walked around and enjoyed visiting the other booths but bought most of my items from them.  They really did have the best selection! A little bit of everything!
It was fun to help them arrange displays as things sold and I really enjoyed my one day there!
I saw many many things I would have loved to bring home, but since I've been downsizing I held it to just a few items I really loved!
(see that post here)
I was there on Thur so not sure how much was left by the end.  After taking these photos many items sold including some to me!
(my pink bowls are in this photo).
Lots of vintage bottles but I resisted!
We were also lucky that the location they choose had a real bathroom
(as opposed to porta potties)
Wed there were so many rain storms they had closed up before I arrived.  Thur it was sunny and warm but there was a nice breeze.  We made sure to stay hydrated as we talked, shopped and sold!
You need help when you do this and their daughter was on hand all week to help out. I had a great time hanging out with her also.
While I really enjoyed my day with them, I must admit I was ready to close up at 5pm and call it a day.  I drove home that night (3 hours) but was glad to sleep in my own bed.  Kathy & Jeff had put me up on Wed night and even took me out to dinner!
I had such a great visit with them!
This is my last photo of their booth.  They also had jewelry, sewing items and those wonderful pillows Kathy made!  So I must say, if you didn't see at least ONE item you would have bought then you have more will power then me!

All in all I had a wonderful time, but I know for sure I would rather be a buyer then a seller!

Thanks again Kathy and Jeff for your great hospitality and for letting me hang out with you!

What I Bought At WLYS 2013

I had such a blast at the Worlds Longest Yard Sale this year.  I took lots of photos of my friends booth and I will do a blog post on that next week!

I was so proud of myself for not going 'overboard' and really loving all that I found!
My first find set me back one dollar!
I have few of these jars in several colors.  This is the largest one I have and I love this color!
At the same booth I found this McCoy pottery piece...its a peach color and unusual.
If someone knows the age of this mark I would love to know!

I KNOW!!  I've been downsizing but these two wine glasses were only 25 cents each and it was church sale and so yes I bought them!
I also bought two little cars for Tiger but they are already at his house!

I did find these two rolling pins!  I didn't have one and I love the chippy red paint on the handle.  The little one is for Tiger when we bake and was 25 cents!  Mine was $3 and a bargain I thought!

Next I went to Kathy and Jeff's booth and I must say they had the most awesome stuff!
This is what I bought!
I love these two bowls!  Hazel Atlas Moderntone platonite pastel pink cream soup bowls!
I have already put these in my kitchen cabinets!
This lone pink wineglass needed a home!
This chalk painted pale pink frame is going to have Paris photos in it soon!
I am so in love with this table!  The rain did some damage to the paint job but I will just paint it again!  Kathy I love this and it looks fabulous in my bedroom!

Now my favorite WLYS find was really a sweet gift from my friend Kathy.  She had made some pillows and when I walked up to the booth this one jumped in my hands!
Made from an old chenille bedspread, Kathy added these sweet flowers!
Kathy insisted that it was a gift!
I love it and soon I'll share how perfect it is in my bedroom makeover!

I bought a few other items but they are gifts and so I can't share them.

Now for the giveaway!
All of these little items just called to me!
I hope you like them! How to win?
Just leave a comment and included the words
'ENTER ME' .
I'll choose a winner on Saturday August 10th

I would love it if you are a follower of A La Carte but it's not a requirement.  However you must include the words "Enter Me" in your comment!

I'm joining these fun parties this week

It's That Time Again!

Time for???
The Worlds Longest Yard Sale!
I know!
With moving I wasn't sure I would go this year but my friend Kathy @ Happy Mrs. C is going to be a seller this year.   She will be at Lone Oak Community Center in Signal Mtn, TN
Kathy and I met online a few years ago and finally met face to face back in June when I took her some things to sell at the WLYS.  She invited me to come and visit her
and so I decided I would!

I do plan to shop a little bit, but since I'm downsizing something will have to be really special for me to buy it!  What I really want to do is help Kathy in her booth and get an idea of how it is from the selling side!
BUT, I still want to do my yearly
Let Me Shop for You Giveaway!
This year will be a little different.  I'll find something that I love that I want to give away and I'll share it with you when I return and let you enter to win it then!

So stay tuned for my 2013 WLYS Adventures!

The Guy Stuff

Today I'm sharing what Mr ALC bought on the Worlds Longest Yard Sale 2012
Mr ALC has a large collection of film cameras & movies cameras.
This 1960's era DeJur 8mm Camera was $5

He also loves tape players, record players and records...
this reel to reel player was another $5
Did I mention radios?  Yes he loves them!
This great 1953 Zenith radio was $15...it has some damage but the cool Bakelite knobs and face are intact and the Mr can make it work!

and this 'thingy' was $2 and will be used for parts
This old sprayer was bought for the non-plastic sprayer attachment....OK...???
(like I said...Guy stuff)
A very nice Maglite flashlight
(which I posed on this .25 Vera scarf I forgot to share in my previous post)

We both love this vintage desk lamp!

Now this is my favorite of the Mr's finds
This amazing Voigtlander Bessa camera & case from the 1930's
I had the best time taking pictures of this great old camera....I will have to do a photo shoot of some of the Mr's great collection of cameras one of these days!
This was $15 and I think a real score!
Thanks to Mr ALC for letting me share his WLYS finds on my blog

Rain Rain Go Away!

This was our wish on Friday of the WLYS!
Rain Rain Go Away!
It was our first time having real rain on the trip and I must say it was not fun!

We left home on Thur and drove to
Mentone, AL
It was a lovely day and we made several stops and even found some great stuff!  I made my first purchase and it was this $1 vase
I've seen these for up to $3 so I was happy!
I bought three things at this stop
This cute little pitcher (copy of a Fiesta piece but still old), McCoy planter and the green vase
I fell head over heels in love with this piece
It was the first day of sales and this lady wasn't budging on her price....I knew if I walked away without it I would be mad at myself
So I didn't!  I paid the most I've ever spent for one item at the WLYS but worth every penny to me!
I looked it up on Ebay and it was selling for $50 plus shipping...I paid $25....I'm happy!
Moving on we stopped at several more sales and I must say this year nothing much jumped out at me at most of the tables.  Just junk or stuff I already have....oh my I have so much stuff I'm realizing and so I kept looking but not buying.
These three items were finally what I purchased
The little Tupperware cookie cutter .25 goes with the mini baker set I have.  The cute mouse mug is a Waechtersbach for my collection and was $2
And I found an orphan!
What a cutie for $1
I think it's time for an Orphan showing soon!
One of my last purchases of the day was this reference book on Milk Glass for $5
The CD (Trisha Yearwood) was $1 at a yard sale at a Church...love those as they have the BEST prices!  So that was it for the day and we headed to our hotel at Fall Creek Falls State Park!
Such a gorgeous view!  We were really tired as it was hot, sunny and we did lots of walking.  I went to sleep with visions of lots of shopping on Friday....little did I know!  We woke up bright and early and headed out for a good breakfast!  I was hungry and we decided to stop at Cracker Barrel and eat before shopping...drove about 30 miles to Crossroads.  We passed several promising yard sales but said we would hit them on the way back!
After breakfast we started driving north on 127 and hit traffic and RAIN!  It was awful.  I was driving and I was so antsy to shop but all the sales were closed up due to the rain.  We drove north and out of most of the rain and about an hour later hit one of our favorite spots
The guy that owns this is a hoot!  He travels with his job and buys at auctions and yard sales all year long and brings it back here for the 9 days a year he is open!
Tons of junk and you have to dig but some treasures can be found!
There was a covered area with tables, boxes and boxes of junk....you could dig and dig and whatever you found was $1....
I found this cool jelly jar glass
I don't know anything about it but pretty cool for $1....of course not being a 'clown' fan it will have to go in the Etsy shop!
I also found this cool clock for Mr ALC.... $1
I found one other thing but it is for Sandie so you have to wait to see that!
Mr ALC found several great items but I'm going to do a separate post on his finds!
We always have the best time here!
It was wet but the rain had stopped while we shopped!  We decided to head back South hoping that some of the sales would be open again after the rain passed through.
Hmmmmmmmm not so much!
We did stop at a few places and I made a couple of purchases for Sandie....
I also got this!
Rusty old garden shears for $1....they look great on my potting bench!
As we continued South this is what happened
Stomp down rain!  I took this picture off the WLYS Facebook page...I was too upset to even take any photos of the rain.  Most of the yard sales were closed up and the large fields of dealers and yard salers were also closed or the fields were just pure mud!  We kept driving and realized...we were done for 2012!
I must say I was disappointed!  I did find some great stuff but just didn't have the fun I normally do.  I also think I realized that I have so much stuff that buying more unless it is really special just isn't going to happen.  The Mr did much better then I did and I'll share his items with you in my next post!  I'll also share with you what I bought for Sandie, the winner of the 'Let Me Shop For You' giveaway! Oh and I didn't forget Mr Tiger
At a Church yard sale I bought the big truck for $1
and I got the cute matchbox cars 2 for $1 at another place
Of course I had to get the Tony the Tiger one's!

So that's it for this years adventure.  We had already decided to do a shorter trip and I'm glad we did.  I'm not sure we will go again next year.  I think we almost do as well, if not better, just going to a new place and finding thrift shops and flea markets on a get away!  We will see how I feel next year!
