X MEANS A KISS!
Now the Question
Why does an "X" mark stand for a kiss?
In medieval times, most people were unable to read or write. When it came time to sign a document, people who could not write usually made an "X" mark. Of course, an "X" is not much of a signature. To add a sense of commitment, it became customary to kiss the "X" after writing it. Kissing the "X" was "performance law," a ritual act that bound the parties the way legal documents bind us today. This act, witnessed by the person who wrote the text, represented a solemn guarantee of the truthfulness of what was written, and an oath to carry out whatever obligations were stated in the document. Over the years, the "X" and the kiss became interchangeable. Today, people who can read and write might still add one or more "X" marks to their letters, maybe with a couple of "O"s thrown in for hugs.So there you have it! Kisses and Hugs....

Love the festive background! Happy 4th!
I knew I came here for a great reason today Linda. I have always signed below my name with X's and O's, but I never knew the meaning behind it. Thank you my friend. I think your bracelet is very special also. Funny that we both posted about bracelets today huh?
I LOVE your background too. Very patriotic. BTW, what happens to this mimi when you get to Z? Do you start all over again? I like it, I might join in next time it goes around.
Happy 4th of July Linda.

I didn't know about kissing the X~ I'm always learning something new on Alphabe-Thursday! Thanks for the lesson, Happy 4th :-)
Thank you for the very informative lesson on the letter "X" and kisses. I never knew that the letter "X" had a history behind it!
I agree X was the hardest. This was very interesting though. I knew about people who couldn't write made an X for their signature but I had no idea about the history of X as it related to the kiss. Great X post.
I did not know that was where the x for kisses came from. Thanks for the history lesson!
I have filled so many letters with x's and o's over the years. :-) It's good to have people to love and who love me in return! Great idea for your x post!!
X also marks the spot! xo sandie

I like your use of X! Very clever!
good piece of history. thanks
Very good solution forthe letter X! And I wish I had had a bracelet like yours to use here, since my blog is supposed to be about jewellery. This time I chose a subject very far removed from jewellery.
Best wishes,
Anna

This was one of the best X posts I've seen. It explains something that's always been slightly mysterious and that bracelet: to die for.

Have a nice evening!
