I'll Fly Away

I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away
When I die, hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away
Some bright morning when this life is over, I'll fly away
To a land on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have grown, I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls, I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away
When I die, hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away
Oh how glad and happy when we meet, I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet, I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away
When I die, hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then, I'll fly away
To a land where joy will never end, I'll fly away
I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away
When I die, hallellujah by and by, I'll fly away

Today my brother flew away...
I hope he has found the peace that he never found in this life.
We love him and he will always be a part of our hearts.

Thoughts On A Sunday

Here it is the Sunday after Thanksgiving and I hope all of you had a great holiday weekend.
Mom and I enjoyed a good meal at Cracker Barrel Thursday.  No cooking & no cleaning this year!  Worked for us!  I did buy a pecan pie and have been eating a piece now and then!
The kids went to the mountains and had a great time.  Here are some great photos they shared!
Diggin in the dirt
Excitement at a waterfall!
I love this photo!  She is so cute!
Shopping for Thanksgiving dinner!
Family photo!!

I am getting better but I am still having this pesky cough.  It woke me up last night and took awhile to get back to sleep.  It has made today a long one.  I have worked on the Christmas decorations today...
A little sneak peek at one of the cubbies!  I have lots more tweaking to do before I share it all with you.  I'm hoping to go simpler this year.  It is honestly getting harder and harder to get all the bins out, put up the decorations and then after Christmas take it all down.  I will continue to decorate, but maybe less will be more for me.
Of course my 'less' is still a lot to some people!

I want to try to really relax and enjoy this Christmas season with an emphasis on Faith, Family and Friends.  I have a few get together's and some church activities already on the calendar.  I've decided to keep gift giving simple this year.  Most of the purchases have been made.  I'm hoping to get my health back up to normal and to see Mom get better also.  Lots of things to look forward to and memories to look back on this year.
I hope to post more on my blog but sometimes it seems so hard, but I'll try.  I read your posts every day and enjoy my visits with you.  The friendships I've made through blogging are really precious to me.  Let the season begin!

Wishing you JOY,

Linda

Family Treasures #4

This time I'm sharing sweet items from my Mom's childhood!
My Mom was born October 18, 1930
The first of six children!
I am so blessed to have her baby book.
This is the book and this photo of her parents holding her.  I was very close to my Berkeland grandparents and so love seeing these photos.
Taped inside the front cover is the receipt for the Dr's bill for her home delivery $15
and the birth announcement
I love the illustrations
Being the first child, her parents kept up with lots of her firsts!
This photo is important because it is one of the few where my Granddaddy had hair.  He was bald at a very young age, so Mom loves this photo.
My Grandmother was only 18 when my Mom was born.  If you think the baby photos of my Mom look like my Granddaughter Rosemary, I think you are right!  Blake has said since she was born, she looks like GrannyB!
I love this photo with the bonnet!
My Grandmother was very sentimental and sent my Mom these baby clothes to her after she was all grown up.  These little gowns were made by my Mom's Aunt Golden.
I adore this bonnet with the old ribbons. So sweet!

These photos are so cute!
Virgie age 3 and 5 1/2 yrs old!
She still has this great smile!
Her family!  Well one more 'surprise' girl was born in 1940.  The only boy (in Grandmother's arms) was suppose to be the last child.
This is my Mom in 1st grade.  They had a contest to see who dressed up as the best baby, and she won!  The dress was made in 1903 and was an actual Christening dress from her Aunt Golden.
The dress which is over 100 years old is not in the greatest of shape, but is a family treasure.
My Mom was a very small girl and able to wear this at age 7.  I love the details of the collar.
All the little tucks and small stitches
Those of you with vintage fabric expertise might tell me how to preserve this even more if possible.
I have more treasures to share from my Mom next time!

Family Treasure's #3

One of my favorite family treasures is one I've had for a very long time.  It belonged to my Dad's Mom and
he gave it to me when I was a child.
This small cedar chest!
I've kept my 'treasures' in this treasure for many years.  It's been refinished by my Dad once but
it needs some tender loving care once again.
It is small and would be called child size I think.
25" long, 10" deep and 12" wide
I can't find a makers mark but Dad's
Mom wrote on the lid of the chest.
I love that she wrote her name in cursive
I have two of her hankies

I tried to find some info online and did find a company called Farley & Loetscher from Dubuque, Iowa that made cedar chests.  She was from Dubuque, Iowa so it seems likely this chest was made by this company.

It's not worth tons of money, but it is priceless to me!  This will be passed on to Miss Rosemary one day!

Family Treasures #2

Last week I shared some of the keepsakes I have from my Dad's childhood.  Now on to his career.
Dad graduated high school in 1948 and joined the Marine Corps.  His dream was to fly airplanes.
It seems he loved airplanes from a young age and had many model airplanes in his room.
My Dad did not go to college, but did qualify for flight training school and would become an officer once he completed his courses.  To do so he had to be discharged from the Marine Corp (he was a private first class) and enlist in the Navy so he could go to flight school in Pensacola, Florida
Here he is in his navy uniform
accepting his diploma from the naval pre-flight school
He became a naval aviator in 1950
he was then decommissioned from the Navy and went back to the Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant
He continued his training at El Toro (Santa Ana), Calif in early 1951

These are from his personal photo album
He flew in the Korean War taking off and landing on air craft carriers and was awarded the air medal for "meritorious acts while participating in aerial flight as a pilot" in Korea.
In 1952 he was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas as a Flight Instructor and it was here that he met my Mother.
They married in 1952
My brother was born in 1953
In 1955 my Dad adopted me and I became a Buschmann too!
Dad was just Dad and his job was being a Marine and flying airplanes...I never thought much about it as a child.  I lived either on base or in communities where many other Marine families lived.
My Dad was a hard worker and did his job well and was promoted many times.  Here he is with his Capt's bars.  He went on to be promoted to Major and in 1966
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel!
We were all very proud of him.
I really began to 'think' about the military and my Dad's career in 1967-68

My Dad was stationed in Vietnam my Senior year in high school.  With all the protests on the news I became aware and concerned.
I was and am a proud Marine Brat and never protested the war.  I wouldn't do that.  I did discuss the war with my Dad and his take on things really made me grow up and see the big picture.

This is my Dad's jewelry box.  He did not wear much more then his wedding ring and a watch but the occasional cuff links and of course dog tags.  These items mean a great deal to me.  We have some of his uniforms and military insignia's but they are in storage and I didn't get them out to photograph them.
Many of my Dad's things have been shared with my brother and the 4 Grandchildren but these three pair of cuff links are the one's I kept. His initials, the Marine Corp insignia and these ruby colored stones.
This is his Naval Aviator Wings
Dad received the Legion of Merit award for his time in Vietnam.  He was Commanding Officer of Marine Air Control Squadron 4.  He was authorized to wear the combat 'V'.  This was a very high honor. We all were (and still are) so proud of him!
My Dad retired from the Marine Corps with almost 25 years of service in 1973.
He went on to have a second career as a computer programmer for Litton, Industries
He retired a second time and planned to travel with my Mother across the country in their RV.  Things didn't go as planned.  Sadly my Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's with Lewy Body Dementia.  It was hard to see this brilliant man unable to remember how to do the simplest things.  I must say Dad kept his good humor through all of it.  Mom became a caretaker and eventually a widow.
On July 21st it will be the 10 year anniversary of my Dad's passing.  We all miss him very much.  He was an Honorable man who taught me so much and influenced the person I am.
*taking a cry break here*

Both my parents were 'keepers' and I am blessed to have so many photos, mementos and other items to help me remember their lives.
I have much more to share in future posts and not all will be so sad!

Thanks for staying with me for this long wordy post.
